Artist Richard Blackwell created a modular design for the ground plane in the M+A Laneway development in Fortitude Valley, Brisbane. The artwork location extends through the centre of the laneway and onto the footpaths of Ann and McLachlan Streets.
This ground plane opportunity was commissioned to add visual texture to the space, invite pedestrians into the laneway at the edges, and guide people through the space. The work Nexus presents an image of a cluster of modules that connect centrally and visually reach in three directions. Two arms of the composition connect from Ann Street to McLachlan Street and meet in the center to create virtual platforms and meeting spots. Nexus also creates an intriguing spacial illusion upwards, communicating to the inhabitants of the nearby buildings.
